Zuni jewelry is widely acclaimed-fashioned of turquoise, shell and jet stone; it is set in silver in intricate patterns known as "needlepoint" or in fine inlay patterns. The Zuni people also are known for exquisite animal "fetishes" carved from stone and other materials. Pottery, beadwork, and painting are also superbly created. Visit the Old Mission or the A:shiwi A:wan Museum to learn more about Zuni heritage and history. Admission: Free Photo Fee: Photos, camcorders and sketching fee. The museum exhibits artifacts recovered from the 11th century pueblo, which is accessed by a self-guided interpretive trail. The national register site was excavated in the 1970's by professional archeologists exposing the fabulous architecture of the Chaco Culture, which flourished in the region, AD 850 to 1130. In addition, the Museum features the Salmon Family's pioneer homestead and Heritage Park, a series of replica habitations, establishing a "Time-Line" of cultures of the 4-Corners. Museum staff also provides professional tours to Chaco Canyon, Navato Pueblitos, and Rockart. Special tours for large groups and custom programs are available.
